Chiedza Khumalo’s Rapid Rise: A Star in the Making

AT just 14 years old, Chiedza Khumalo’s rise in the world of football is gaining mosmentum with each passing day.
Recently, the rising star returned from the Cosafa Games held in South Africa, marking another milestone in her rapidly growing career.

Khumalo, who has been playing organised football since 2017, continues to make strides towards her ambitious goals.

Her journey began at grassroots levels playing for her primary school team.

“Football started as a hobby because I loved it, but what really drove me was my desire to make my parents proud,” Khumalo shared.

Her passion for the game runs deep, as she hails from a footballing family.

Her grandfather, Michael Mlalazi, played lower division football.

However, Mlalazi’s promising career was cut short due to the demands of a full-time job that left him with little time for training.

“At the time, the money from football wasn’t enough to sustain my family, so I had to focus on a job that didn’t allow me the flexibility to pursue my passion,” Mlalazi explained.

Chiedza, however, has not faced the same challenges.

Grateful for the mentorship of her coach, Nobuhle Majika, Khumalo credits much of her development to the former national team player.

“I’d like to thank my coach Nobuhle Majika, who made me who I am in football,” she said.

Majika, heads recently promoted to the elite women’s division soccer side, Mpopoma Sports Academy, which is renowned for nurturing young talent.

This year, Khumalo earned a place in the Zimbabwe Under-15 national team, which traveled to South Africa for the Cosafa Games in late November.

She also went to Namibia with another age-group side.

Reflecting on her experience, she emphasized the importance of teamwork.

“In South Africa, I learned that you can’t play a football match alone,” Khumalo said.

She was personality of the game in one of the matches there.

Her recent performances in the national were impressive, scoring two goals in key matches.

Her trophy collection speaks volumes about her talent.

Among her achievements are the 2024 Division 1 Women’s Football Top Goal Scorer title, the 2022 Lozikheyi FC Top Goal Scorer honour, Best Player at the Petra Trials and the 2023 national team trials.

Khumalo’s ultimate ambition is clear, which is to play for Manchester City.

“My biggest dream is to play for Manchester City. I feel so motivated every time I watch them play,” she revealed.
With her talent, drive and determination, it’s clear that Chiedza Khumalo is a player to watch.

She is on a scholarship at Mpopoma High School, Khumalo has the perfect platform to continue showcasing her talents.
