Chief Chireya drags headman to court

Chief Chireya is also accusing his headman of having converted to his own use about $1 000 cash paid as fines by his subjects convicted at his traditional court.

“I have since reported the matter to the police after my headman denied the charges before my court. The matter will now have to be finalised by the courts after police opened a fraud docket against him.

“This was after he had failed to account for about two tonnes of maize he received from villagers as contributions towards Isiphala senkosi and about $1 000 cash which he received as fines from villagers convicted of various offences,” he said.

Chief Chireya said his headman  failed to account for the maize and cash when he met all his headmen to have an audit of what they had been receiving and receipting as Isiphala senkosi contributions or fines since last year.

“When I then called for a meeting and asked them to account for what they have been collecting, Headmen Nembudziya only gave us a long list of farm produce and cash he received from the subjects but he had converted everything he received to his own use. He is failing to account for about two tonnes of maize and about $1 000 cash,” said the chief.

Headman Nembudziya, however, denied having converted to his own use the Isiphala Senkosi contributions when asked for his comment.

He also denied that there was about $1 000 paid as fines missing saying the majority of his subjects who were convicted under his court were yet to pay the money.

“I have handed over everything I collected as contributions towards Isiphala Senkosi to the chief and I did account for both the crops and cash. He is, however, insisting that some money and maize is missing and the matter is now in the courts,” he said.
