Chiefs bemoan exclusion

Herald Reporter
TRADITIONAL leaders have bemoaned their exclusion in the selection and installation of chiefs saying this was creating problems between them and Government.

Speaking at an inaugural meeting between the traditional leaders and the new Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Cde Saviour Kasukuwere in Harare on Saturday, President of the Chief’s Council of Zimbabwe Chief Fortune Charumbira said there was need for constant consultations.

“In terms of Section 283 of the new Constitution, appointment of Chiefs shall be undertaken through Provincial Assemblies of Chiefs and the National Chief’s Council.

“The National Chiefs Council proposed a team composed of two non-national Chiefs Council members and two national Chiefs Council members,” said Chief Fortune Charumbira.

“However, the interpretation of the law between us and the ministry seems to be different. We differ with the ministry in terms of the appointments of chiefs as it excludes us in the installation process. For political, personal and corruption reasons, sometimes chiefs are sidelined,” said Chief Charumbira.
