Seke North choir emerged this year’s winner of the Mubvuwi weUnited Methodist Church music festival that was held over the weekend at St Peter’s Seke South Circuit in Chitungwiza.
The choir outclassed 11 other groups that were vying for the top prize comprising a trophy and cash.
Running under the theme, “Go Ye Therefore and Make Disciples of All Nations . . . (Mark 28 verse 19-28)” the festival, which was in its 13th edition, was judged out of 200 marks.
The choirs sang two songs, one own choice and one set piece titled “Apo Jesu Akakwira” .
The adjudicators were looking at stage presence, lead singing, responding voices, instrumentation, interpretation and preaching statement.
The second and third prizes went to Chitungwiza Circuit and Hunyani, who were accorded a trophy and shield respectively.
As the norm for the festival, the top three choir groups are going to battle it out at a conference set for October 3 in Rusape.
“The winners today will meet other 18 choirs in Rusape from six districts and clash on the same platform,” said one of the co-ordinators Solomon Nyamundaya.
He said they have invited 15 choirs, but some couldn’t make it.
“We were expecting 15 choirs to grace this festival, however, 12 made it with three including Hwedza and Svosve failing to make it. However, we are very grateful this year with the attendance that has seen an increase in numbers,” he said.
Last year, the first prize went to St Peter’s. Some of the choir that took part include Dema, Chihota, Nenguwo, Zengeza Central, Seke Central, Seke South, Dombotombo, Seke East, Zengeza and Nyameni.
