Orlando Pirates this weekend and the injury to the steely defender comes as a set-back to the Glamour Boys ahead of the massive Soweto derby.
The team’s physiotherapist Dave Milner yesterday told the club’s official website that the former Dynamos defender would have to undergo an operation on his knee.
“Sweswe will be undergoing an operation on his right knee and could be out for three months,” Milner said.
The centre back injured his leg during a match against FC AK in January but aggravated the injury last week ahead of their game against Cape Town All Stars.
However, there was some good news for coach Vladimir Vermezovic as midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala is expected to return to action this weekend.
The Bafana Bafana midfielder had been nursing an injury since the league resumed this year.
Tshabalala scored the decisive goal the last time Chiefs met Pirates in September last year.
Chiefs will, however, not be short of manpower as veteran midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha is upbeat ahead of the derby.
The Zimbabwean midfield general and one of the mainstays at Chiefs, believes playing in the derby is a dream for every player.
“It’s is a big game and one has to look at the attendance of the Telkom Knockout final last season, that even broke the attendance record of the World Cup,” he told the club’s website.
