adminKaizer Chiefs have confirmed that they will back Itumeleng Khune through his journey in earning more minutes on the pitch following a year on the sidelines.
On Sunday, Khune played his first game a year and two weeks since he last featured in an official match – which was ironically another MTN8 quarterfinal that was decided on penalties.
While he had to deal with penalty shootout misery against Mamelodi Sundowns last year, Khune was in a celebratory mood on Sunday after making the difference in the shootout.
“We needed to give Itu the opportunity because he has been working very hard,” says Zwane.
Khune has started off the new campaign behind Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen.
“But I also wanted him to show the hunger and that desire because a fully fit Itu can give you a lot of things on the field.
“He can lead the team and can inspire a lot of youngsters.
“If he picks up a good example then he makes our life easier.
“Fortunately, today he came to the party after quite some time of not playing but I think he showed his leadership skills and commitment.
“He also led the team very well at the back though I feel he could have done better in some instances.
“It is good to have him back and we are looking forward to seeing Itu who shows the hunger, the Itu that I know and the Itu that I want to see and would want to see going forward not only for now.
“We have assembled a team of youngsters with a few senior members and Itu will play a prominent role to help these boys settle quickly and be able to exert themselves and showcase their talents.
“We are happy to see him back and we are there for him to help boost his confidence because we know how important he is for the club,” says Zwane. – Kickoff
