Chiefs urged to promote health

seminar in Harare that traditional leaders were in a good position to address issues of sexual reproductive health in rural areas.

“About 70 percent of the country’s population resides in the rural areas and traditional leaders are their immediate leaders,” said Minister Chombo.

“They possess greater insight and knowledge into the sexual and reproductive health statuses of rural communities. The seminar comes at a critical point where the nation is grappling with the effects of the HIV and Aids pandemic.”

Minister Chombo said the seminar would offer chiefs an opportunity to learn and share on issues to do with sexual reproductive health rights.
Sexual reproductive health consultant, Mrs Carol Maposhere said the two-day seminar was geared at orienting chiefs on elements of sexual reproductive health rights and identifying areas where traditional leaders could play a part in promoting the elements.

“The programme is designed to ensure that traditional leaders better understand issues of sexual reproductive health and address them in their villages,” she said.
