chairperson Dr Mariyawanda Nzuwah has said.
Dr Nzuwah said this on Wednesday after the tour of the Registrar General’s Office at KGV1 by a high powered delegation that included senior Government officials.
The delegates included Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Rita Makarau, Commissioner Bessie Nhandara, Registrar General Tobaiwa Mudede, Secretary for Finance Mr Willard Manungo and his Home Affairs ministry counterpart Mr Melusi Matshiya.
“We plan to avail as many Government vehicles and staff as possible for the purpose of elections.
“There is enough personnel and not the inflated figures of ghost workers which were said in some media reports.
“The actual number we have flushed out after an audit was 5 000. We have been assisting each other with the RG’s department to use technology,” Dr Nzuwah said.
Dr Nzuwah said those found included personnel that was underqualified to perfom Government duty.
Previous media reports stated that the 236 000 civil service was pregnant with ghost workers in excess of 70 000.
The reports indicated that Government could have lost over US$17,5 million per month through payments between 2008 and 2011 and over US$1 billion since 2008.
In March this year, several Government officials including Finance Minister Tendai Biti fiercely campaigned for the elimination of ghost workers from the Government payroll.
