A 27-YEAR-OLD Chikanga resident, Alphones Singende, has been sentenced to an effective three years in prison for a violent robbery incident that left the victim injured and without his mobile phone.
Singende was convicted after a full trial and charged under Section 126 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23].
The case was heard before magistrate Mrs Annie Ndiraya.
Prosecutor, Mr Thurstone Mubvumbi told the court that the incident occurred on August 31, 2025 at around 4am near the Sports Field in Chikanga.
Singende and an unidentified accomplice, who is still at large, attacked the victim, who was walking home from Charts Seven Night Club.
The victim was reportedly clapped and struck on the head with a brick, causing him to collapse. Singende’s accomplice then snatched the victim’s iPhone X7 before fleeing the scene.
The injured complainant later filed a report at ZRP Chikanga, and a medical examination confirmed head injuries sustained during the attack.
In delivering the sentence, Mrs Ndiraya emphasized the growing concern over robbery cases in Manicaland, and emphasized that a deterrent sentence was necessary to curb the trend.
Singende was initially handed a five-year prison term.
However, the court considered his status as a first-time offender and suspended 18 months on condition of non-repetition.
An additional six months were suspended on the condition that he restitutes the complainant of his cellphone, leaving him with an effective three-year jail term.
