IN-FORM top amateur golf player Darlington Chikanyambidze continued with his fine run when he managed to win the inaugural Mashonaland East Golf Amateur Championship after an impressive five-under-par.

The Chapman-based player was in fine form during the two-day tournament that also affects order of merit.

Chikanyambidze, an upcoming golf star, says he will continue to push to improve ranking.

“The competition is always tough but I managed to do well from the opening day through to the third and final round,” he said.

“I had a good second round where I carded nine-under-63 after a disappointing opening round of 78 and I managed to complement all that with a two-under-par on the last round.

“My aim is to continue doing well and I am happy that we are having so much game time this season and it is good for us. I have played against most of the top amateurs winning some tournaments and losing some but, I am happy that I keep on improving.”

Teenage sensation Nathan Van Royen was second with scores of 80, 71 and 70 for a 10-over-par after the three rounds. Van Rooyen, a St John’s College student, made history when he was crowned Zim-babwe Amateur Champion at just age 15.

Another youngster Toby Elis was among the top of the leader board as he finished third at six-over-par with rounds of 76, 72 and 74. Kelvin Muchenje was fourth on ten-over-par. Muchenje carded rounds of 75,74 and 75.
