SPRINTER Gabriel Chikomo has joined hands with Thomas Coulter Primary School in Hwange and opened an athletics academy.
According to the multiple chamber of mines’ 100M, 4X100M and 4X400M record holder, the academy, the first in the coal mining town, will be known by the school’s name.
Thomas Coulter Primary deputy headmaster Enoch Ngwenya is a member of the provincial athletics board and a qualified athletics trainer. Chikomo’s records were set at Peak Mine Stadium in Shurugwi. He ran the 100M in 10.44 seconds and his relay team was made up of Savieri Ngidhi, Themba Ncube and Philip Mukomana.
“We want to start training early next month in preparation for the schools’ first term track and field athletics competitions. We want to do a proper thing and who knows, we could produce the next athlete to break my record, which has stood for 25 years,” said Chikomo, who also represented Zimbabwe in regional and international competitions.
Chikomo together with another legend Themba Ncube and other renowned athletes are products of the once mighty Hwange Athletics Club that folded up due to the company’s poor performance.
