Afro-dancehall artist Chillmaster, has once again stirred public emotion and debate with the release of his latest track, Ndaremerwa, a sombre and reflective song inspired by the car accident he was involved in earlier this year at an incident in which he hit a pedestrian.
The accident, which occurred last month, and killed a 50 year old.
The song, released on all major platforms on Tuesday, offers a raw glimpse into Chillmaster’s state of mind, guilt, and confusion in the aftermath of the incident.
In the opening verse, he sings:
“Pfungwa hadzichafungi, vangoda vari kuti wakauraya, aiganza takazvitaura…”
The lyrics sparked an immediate reaction from fans and critics alike while some applauded his vulnerability and artistic courage to express pain through music, others were not as forgiving.
“You can feel his pain in every word. He’s not pretending. He’s processing,” one fan commented on YouTube.
“Vese vari kumushuwira zvanaka let’s gather here please, to show some love,” wrote another.
But not everyone shared the sentiment.
“Is this an apology or a PR because it feels like emotional manipulation.”
Another wrote, “You don’t heal someone you hit with a car by singing about how you feel.”
Some comments were even more scathing, accusing Chillmaster of deflecting blame and minimizing the seriousness of the incident.
“Murder is murder bambo,” one comment read,
“Dai matobvisa maBraids mumusoro maita murume kwaye”.
