A 48-year-old Chimanimani man has been jailed for an effective seven years for two counts of attempted murder.

The man Willard Kuretu of Bvumbura Village, Chief Mutambara in Chimanimani, had initially been sentenced to nine years in prison, of which two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on April 16, 2023, at around 4:30 pm, at Bvumbura Business Centre, the man attacked two fellow villagers in separate but connected incidents.

He first struck Prince Mutereko three times on the head with a machete for unknown reasons. Mutereko sustained deep head wounds and required urgent medical treatment.

During the same confrontation, Blessing Bangai tried to intervene to protect Mutereko. The man then struck Bangai once on the head with a stone, causing another deep head injury.

Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority has strongly condemned violence, urging communities to settle disputes peacefully and to report any threats or violent behaviour before it escalates.
