Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Mandi Chimene launched the community and recreation club system which seeks to foster increased mass participation in sport and recreation activities in the province.

The launch was held at Sakubva.

The community and recreation club system is a grassroots sport and recreation programme that promotes mass participation by all Zimbabweans in sporting activities.

The system is expected to open new opportunities for untapped talent in the province.

All the province’s seven districts are expected to launch the same project at district level.

The programme seeks to promote healthy lifestyles for all Zimbabweans while promoting sport and infrastructure development in all communities.

Addressing athletes and members of the community at Sakubva, Chimene said the programme was pivotal in promoting sport for all.

She said it would create jobs for the entire province in various portfolios in the sporting industry.

“The community sport and recreation club system is an attempt by Government not only to introduce organised sport in previously disadvantaged communities, but will also integrate previously marginalised talent into the mainstream sport and recreation activities of the nation.

“It is also pivotal in promoting sport for all and also providing a laboratory for incubating talent.

“Through this programme, thousands of jobs will be created for the community in the province in various portfolios as administrators, athletes and technical officials.

“We have quite a number of athletes in the province who have developed through the club system. We can mention the likes of Willard Katsande, Genius Chidzikwe and recently Maud Mafuruse who is in Iceland.

“I urge the entire province to take this project seriously. As we are working on our provincial selections in preparations for the rebranded Zimbabwe National Youth Games, I expect all associations and administrators to play a pivotal role so that our province excel.”
