The China Film Festival in Zimbabwe marked a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two nations, celebrating 45 years of friendship and cooperation.
The festival, co-hosted by China’s National Film Administration and Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, brought together people from both countries to showcase China’s rich cinematic heritage.
To mark the 45th anniversary of relations, the China embassy is organizing a series of cultural events, including a friendship-themed photo exhibition, an essay contest, an academic symposium, and basketball and table tennis matches.
In his speech at the film festival, Ambassador Zhou said the milestone adds another chapter to the cultural connections.
“Over the past 45 years, China and Zimbabwe have forged an unbreakable bond of friendship. Our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation has flourished across all sectors, yielding tangible benefits for both nations. Yet, the true strength of our partnership lies in the deep and enduring connections between our peoples.
“Our people-to people connections have been strong and robust. Each year, tens of thousands of travellers bridge the distance between our two countries, while hundreds of Zimbabwean friends actively participate in cultural and educational exchange programs,” he said.
The Ambassador said the festival served as a platform to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between China and Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe Stone Sculpture Exhibition in Beijing last years, featuring masterpieces by Dominic Benhura and other renowned sculptors, showcased Zimbabwe’s rich artistic heritage.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwean footballers like Nyasha Liberty Mushekwi have captivated Chinese audiences with their skills and passion.
China’s film industry, is now one of the world’s largest entertainment sector in the world with the second-largest global box office generating $6 billion in revenue in 2024.
Their managed to present four films whose combined box office in China exceeded $7.3 billion.
“Through the universal language of cinema, the festival reminded us that despite our differences, we share a common humanity. The films screened at the festival resonated with timeless truths that unite us, including the enduring strength of love, the transformative power of courage, and our universal year.
“Through these films, we invite you to discover China not as a distant land, but as a tapestry of lives and emotions that mirror our common humanity,” he said.
The films included ‘Panda Plan’ an action-comedy that blends martial arts with the charm of a mischievous panda, delivering heartfelt messages about animal conservation and the importance of family. ‘Hot and Spicy’ an uplifting underdog story that reminds us that it’s never too late to defy the odds and chase our boldest dreams.
The other two films which were screened are ‘The Chinese Pilot’ a gripping true story of aviation crisis, where one man’s unwavering resolve saves hundreds of lives against overwhelming odds and ‘Operation Red Sea’ a high-stakes counter-terrorism mission that honours the sacrifice and duty of soldiers in the face of peril.
