Chindungwe named Chicken Inn player of the year

Club chairman Lifa Ncube confirmed that Chindungwe nicknamed Basic Finest because of his simple play on the field, had been crowned Chicken Inn Player of the Year.

He said the club had opted for a low key event to thank players for a good season.

“We just decided as an executive to hold a small function where we would just say ‘thank you to the boys’ for a good season. We are proud of their third place finish, so the function was basically to celebrate that and we kept it a club thing,” said Ncube.

Chicken Inn finished third in a highly competitive season.

Tendai Mukambi who scored eight goals for the club was awarded $500 for his efforts. Had he started the season with the rest of the team he could have probably been among the season’s top performers. He was unsettled and wanted to join his home town side Tripple B and it was only towards the opening of the second transfer-window that he committed himself to the Bulawayo side.

Brian Mbiriri is the Chicken Inn’s most disciplined player. The              left-footed star, one of the most disciplined players in the league, got a good Christmas present of $500.

Khulumani Ncube was adjudged to be the club’s most promising junior and received $300.

Club coach Adam Ndlovu who led the club to an impressive third place finish in only the club’s second season in the Castle Lager Premiership, commended the club for the gesture.

He also praised club supporters for boosting the prizes awarded to players.

“Some of the players ended up getting $500 more than what we had initially set aside as tokens of appreciation. We are elated by the supporters’ good gesture,” said the former Zimbabwe international.

It is however Chindungwe’s selection as player of the year that the media and soccer analysts will welcome as it is testimony that his selection among the country’s best was deserved.

Most clubs rely on statistics and internal discipline for the awards.
