MANICALAND Pool Association chairman Stephen Chingwingwi led by example when he scooped the Black Label pool tournament played at Chitsa Bar in Dangamvura last Saturday. Chingwingwi won the provincial tournament which drew 50 participants from all over Manicaland. For his efforts, Chingwingwi pocketed $250 prize money.
Walter Sandako was second placed, while Brighton Nyauchi was in third position. The two pocketed $150 and $100 respectively.
Manicaland Pool Association vice-chairman Taurai Makanidzana said two more players other than the three winners were selected to participate in the national pool tournament (tomorrow) Saturday in Zvishavane.
“Masimba Kedha and Trust Matsikure, who came fourth and fifth, did not receive any prize money but managed to secure places in the provincial squad that will be travelling to Zvishavane on Friday for the national pool tournament.
“The squad also includes players who were selected by the National Pool Association to participate at the national finals.
“Marvelous Chigwada, Munyaradzi Nedziwe, Willard Ngorima and Herbert Mandebvu (Cruise Pool Club) were selected by the National Pool Association,” he said.
Makanidzana apologised for the glitches that affected the smooth running of last weekend’s tournament as some players felt short-changed after failing to participate.
“Although the tournament had 50 participants, more were expecting to play. The rules were laid down by the sponsors, a move that did not go down well with most of the pool players.
“The sponsors asked people to buy two bottles of 750ml Black Label beer or three of 375ml Black Label beer to enter the competition and the first 50 to buy qualified.
“This did not go down well with most players who failed to participate. As the provincial association we apologise on behalf of the sponsors and we hope that next time such a tournament we will be able to accommodate as many players as possible,” said Makanidzana.
