IN-FORM Zimbabwean professional golfer Robson Chinhoi managed to make the cut at the Mediclinic Investments Challenge in Free State, South Africa at the weekend.
It was the first Sunshine Tour tournament of the year.
The Royal Harare-based professional was part of over 140 players, who began the campaign last Friday and he went all the way to finish position 24.
Zimbabwe had four representatives at the tournament held over four days at Maccauavlei Golf Club.
Chinhoi was joined by Nyasha Muyambo, Ben Follet-Smith, and Stuart Krog who all failed to cut the R2 million tournament.
Throughout the four rounds, Chinhoi had under-par scores of 69, 68, 69, and 70 for a total of 276 to tie with Herman Loubser, Willie Oliver, and Estiaan Conradie.
The tournament was won by South African Ryan van Velzen, who picked up from where he left off in 2023 by playing the same high-quality golf as he signed for a 64 in a weather-interrupted third round to lead.
Despite a major thunderstorm that delayed play, Van Velzen showed the composure of a young star who knows he belongs at the highest level of the game as he climbed onto the lead on 17 under par.
With the victory, Van Velzen claimed his third Sunshine Tour victory in 10 months.
The 22-year-old Van Velzen carded a final round of 64 — his second 64 of the weekend — to finish on 25 under par overall, with Neil Schietekat taking second place on 21 under par following a closing 67.
LB Boshoff, Jason Roets, Jovan Rebula, Dylan Mostert, and Yurav Premlall shared third place on 18-under par.
Van Velzen’s victory came at the back of a strong summer where he challenged for the DP World Tour co-sanctioned Investec South African Open before finishing second.
This also adds to his wins in the Limpopo Championship and the Bain’s Whisky Ubunye Team Championship last year.
