CHINHOYI Municipality has embarked on major road rehabilitation and upgrades using funds disbursed under Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase 2 (ERRP2) by Zinara amounting to $70 million.
A contractor is working on putting final touches to the Rujeko-Ruvimbo Road with a section now having been opened to traffic, while final coat of tarmac is expected to be applied on the road.
The road was badly damaged by incessant rains that were received in the area for the past two rainy seasons. A resident, Jealous Katibvu, said the new road was going to improve movement as transporters, including commuter omnibuses, taxis and buses, were now shunning the road.
Council spokesperson Tichaona Mlauzi said 10 percent of the allocation was assigned to road patching.
“We have disbursed $7 million for road patching and we are purchasing stones and bitumen for road patching, cement for culverts and drains,” said Mlauzi.
The council has started working on storm drains in Cold Stream and Ruvimbo suburbs.
A foot bridge across a stream between Katanda and Hunyani for Ward 3 and Ward 4 residents is also being constructed.
The contractor has also done the Hunyani-Brundish route connecting the two suburbs with other suburbs including Gunhill and Chikonohono.
Last year, the council received $132 million which was used for the surfacing of 5,7km and regravelling 22km.
ERRP2 is a government’s response to the country’s roads that were badly damaged by rains and poor maintenance.
