Chinhoyi Municipality recently received a major boost in its fight against Covid-19 after its twin city in China, Dongyang, donated goods worth US$10 000.
The donation, which comprised 40 000 face masks and latex gloves, will assist the provincial capital’s efforts to stem local transmissions.
Chinhoyi mayor, Councillor Dyke Makumbi, said the donation followed a formal request they had made for assistance.
“When this Covid-19 started, we engaged the mayor of Dongyang City of China for assistance and he agreed to assist,” he said.
“The 20 000 face masks and pairs of latex gloves will go a long way in protecting our staff, front line workers and other vulnerable groups of society.
“Old people’s homes and orphanages in the town will get their share of the donated items as we believe they too require protective clothing.”
The council’s spokesperson, Mr Tichaona Mlauzi, said Chinhoyi was going to put the donation to good use.
“Covid-19 is counter-productive, if we don’t manage it properly it cascades to our economy and social being of our communities as well,” he said.
“We urge our communities to observe the stipulated regulations to avoid unnecessary exposure from the virus.”
The twinning arrangements between the two cities started in 2019 when Chinhoyi signed bilateral arrangements with Dongyang City during a visit by officials from that city at the invitation of the Government.
