BUOYANT Chipinge-born model, Brenda Mhlanga, is thrilled to be selected as one of the national finalists for the Miss Albinism Africa pageant, slated for Harare in June.
This marks the first time the event will be hosted in Zimbabwe, and Mhlanga, affectionately known as Brandie, is among the 17 contestants from across the region, taking part in the pageant.
She currently holds the title – Miss Albinism Zimbabwe first princess.
In an interview, Mhlanga shared that growing up in an environment where people had mixed views on albinism motivated her to challenge herself and become a source of inspiration.
Her first step was to transform her lived experiences into a book titled Taught by Experience, where she addresses the challenges faced by individuals with albinism and offers biblical guidance on regaining confidence.
Mhlanga is as a co-director of the “One Sunscreen, One Life Saved” campaign, which focuses on sourcing and distributing sunscreen lotions to remote areas of Zimbabwe.
“As I step into 2025, I am filled with excitement and purpose. As a model, I am not just passionate about fashion, I am driven to make a difference. My goal is to inspire young people, especially those with albinism, to love themselves and chase their dreams. I want to show them that their uniqueness is their superpower.
“I intend to reach out to people with albinism in remote communities, and help them to fight skin cancer as well as mentoring young people living with albinism, sharing my own experiences and helping them regain their confidence.
“Competing for the Miss Albinism Africa title, will amplify my advocacy work, and give me a platform to influence policies that impact people with albinism across Africa. I intend to contribute significantly to the fight against skin cancer and represent the albinism community in the climate justice discourse. I believe that fashion can be a powerful tool for change. This year, I am dedicating to using my voice, platform, and passions to make a real difference in the lives of others,” said Mhlanga.
She said Zimbabwe being chosen to host the prestigious event is a great honour and testament to the country’s increasing dedication to foster inclusivity and diversity.
“The fact that Zimbabwe has been chosen to host this prestigious event is a huge honour and a reflection of the country’s growing commitment to promote inclusivity and diversity. I am thrilled to see our nation taking centre stage in promoting the welfare and rights of people with albinism. For me, Miss Albinism Africa coming to Zimbabwe is a beacon of hope, inspiration, and empowerment.
It is a reminder that our voices matter, our stories deserve to be told, and our beauty should be celebrated,” she said.
Who has inspired her journey?
“I am blessed to have three amazing women in my life who inspire me every day. My mom is my rock, my guiding light. She has taught me that even in the darkest moments, the sun will shine again. Her strength and resilience are qualities I admire and aspire to master. I also have friends and loved ones who include Shamiso Winnet Mupara who always believe in my potential. She pushed me to dream big, to aim for the impossible. Her belief in me gave me the courage to take risks and pursue my passions. Also the director of Miss Albinism Africa, Brenda Mudzimu, who is a true trailblazer.
“ Her determination, passion, and perseverance inspire me to chase my own dreams, no matter how daunting they may seem. These three women have helped shape me into the person I am today. They have taught me valuable lessons, offered unwavering support, and shown me what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning. I am forever grateful for their love, guidance, and inspiration,” she said, adding that her journey to stardom as a person living with albinism has been filled with numerous challenges.
“Discrimination, stereotypes, lack of representation, skin care issues, and feelings of self-doubt and insecurity have all been part of the experience. But I have learnt to embrace and love myself, take care of both my mind and body, and draw inspiration from others in the industry. It is important to surround yourself with positive energy and supportive people who believe in your dreams. Rejection is not the end, it is an opportunity to grow and improve. Explore your passions beyond modeling, stay humble and thankful for every opportunity, and always set boundaries to protect your well-being. Above all, keep pushing forward and stay focused on your goals,” Mhlanga added.
