The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a case of culpable homicide in which a 44-year-old Chitungwiza man allegedly ran over his seven-month-old baby as he was reversing on Thursday.
Elton Muvirimi of house number 3705, Unit D in Seke, is yet to produce his driver’s licence.
Harare Police Spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident.
He said Muvirimi’s Toyota Wish vehicle was parked at his house on 30 April while his baby was playing under the vehicle.
Inspector Chakanza said at around 1600 hours, Muvirimi entered the car without checking underneath, started the vehicle, and began reversing. He subsequently ran over his child, crushing her head.
“The infant sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. At around 1800 hours, a report was made to ZRP Chitungwiza Traffic. Muvirimi’s motor vehicle did not sustain any damage and was taken to VID Chitungwiza for examination,” Inspector Chakanza said.
He added that the deceased was taken to the Chitungwiza Central Hospital mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.
“Muvirimi is being charged with contravening Section 49(a)(b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 (culpable homicide), and investigations are underway.
“We urge motorists to check their surroundings before reversing to avoid such incidents,” Inspector Chakanza said.
