The man who once said he lived rugby, Brighton Chivandire, is now convinced that what he needs at present is some time away from the game.
Chivandire retired as Zimbabwe Rugby Union director of rugby under unclear circumstances last month. He will not be short of suitors given his illustrious record as an administrator and coach, but the former Sables mentor says he is in no hurry to get back into the scrimmage.
“The plan is to take as much time away from the sport and regroup before I decide on a new course of action,” said Chivandire. “At the moment, I am just waiting for the resumption of the school boy rugby season because I have a contract to coach the St John’s (High) Under-15 side. Other than that, I am on a break and taking it easy for a while. I will only make a decision on my future when, and if, the right offer comes my way.”
However, sources suggest Chivandire could resurface sooner than he is letting on as Sables gaffer Cyprian Mandenge reportedly wants him as part of his new technical set up.
Mandenge believes Chivandire, who coached the Sables between 2004 and 2005, will come in handy as the forwards coach.
Daniel Hondo, another favourite of the national team gaffer, has already joined the national team as backline coach and was present when the side regrouped for camp last week in preparation for next month’s Hong Kong Invitational.
Chivandire is one of the best-qualified coaches in Zimbabwe, being one of only two men who hold an International Rugby Board level III coaching certificate. Godwin “Jaws” Murambiwa is the other.
Chivandire said he is yet to be contacted with regards the Sables role. “No, Mandenge is yet approach me,” he said.
