VILLAGERS resettled to pave way for the construction of Chivhu Dam have been given first priority in the community irrigation scheme established by the Government about two kilometres from the massive water reservoir.
These beneficiaries have already planted 20 hectares of wheat which is being irrigated by centre pivots availed by Government, for easier agricultural activities.
The Government supplied the inputs.
Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) has been tasked to assist the beneficiaries who have embarked on a commercial farming drive.
On Friday last week, the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr Anxious Masuka, toured Chivhu Irrigation Scheme and met with the beneficiaries who praised the Government for the scheme.
Ms Catherine Mukucha, who is a beneficiary of the scheme, thanked Government for the gesture, adding that the move will definitely have a positive impact in her life.
“This is a commendable gesture by the Government which will definitely transform my life. I want to thank President Mnangagwa for what he is doing for us here,” she said.
Ms Norea Rubhacha said through this scheme, her family will have an income which will enable her children to finish school.
“I am happy that President Mnangagwa is doing this scheme to benefit us. I am one of the beneficiaries. This gesture will earn us a living and the gains will assist me in paying fees for my children. This is commendable, what we are doing here is profitable and our lives will soon be transformed,” she said.
Another beneficiary Mr Ephraim Sengweni said the Second Republic is fulfilling its promises and should be applauded for that.
“We are happy with our President’s Vision 2030, and his objective to transform our lives. He said no one and no place will be left behind as far as development is concerned and today we are witnessing that objective being fulfilled.
“We are grateful to him for this irrigation scheme which will definitely benefit us. We are optimistic of a bumper harvest here and we will be smiling all the way to the bank.
“To our President, your marvellous works are all there for us to see, development throughout the country is guaranteed and we will be with you come 2023.”
Mr Wilfred Dzimba, chairperson of Chivhu Irrigation Scheme, said construction of Chivhu Dam and the establishment of the irrigation scheme is a step in the right direction towards achieving an upper middle income society by 2030.
“We thought this dam would just be there to keep fish, but look here we are, with an irrigation scheme. We were also given centre pivots, this is wonderful. We are going to work hard, agriculture is a business and we will prosper”.
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East Province Dr Aplonia Munzverengwi commended the President for the dam and irrigation scheme.
“We are thankful for this irrigation scheme and this dam.
“What I am seeing here is amazing. These are the works and fruits brought about by the New Dispensation. Chivhu will no longer be the same again. Mashonaland East is a farming province and we thank Government for supporting us like this.”
Dr Masuka challenged the beneficiaries to work hard and earn a living through commercial agriculture they will be doing in the scheme.
“This scheme belongs to you, make use of it and contribute to the realisation of Vision 2030. No one will take this scheme from you. So work hard.”
