Villagers in the Mhandamabwe and Takavarasha areas in Chivi District have been thrown a lifeline after the local authority teamed up with the District Development Fund (DDF) and other wellwishers to repair damaged bridges and build a new school in the district.
The local authority teamed up with DDF to rebuild Takavarasha Bridge over Nyamutedzi River which connects Takavarasha area and Mabika in Chivi North.
Takavarasha Bridge is also a key link for communities in the north-most fringes of Chivi to travel to Zvishavane town.
The bridge was swept away by floods five years ago and was impassable during the rainy season.
Chivi Rural District Council(RDC) chair Councillor Godfrey Mukungunugwa hailed the partnership between his local authority and DDF which has led to the rehabilitation of several bridges across Chivi with Takavarasha Bridge being the flagship project.
Councillor Mukungunugwa disclosed that his council was also building Mhandamabwe Primary school near Mhandamabwe Growth point with the help of private wellwishers.
Civil works on the new school have already started with the community excited by the project that will see school children who are currently walking 10km to school daily getting relief.
Primary school children around Mhandamabwe currently walk an average of 10km to get to the nearest schools such as Masunda, Madan’ombe and Jenya primary schools.
Councillor Mukungunugwa is optimistic this situation will from next year be a thing of the past as Mhandamabwe Primary is expected to enroll its inaugural group of students.
Chivi RDC has been on a warpath building new schools, installing piped water, drilling boreholes, repairing roads and bridges mainly using devolution funds from Government that has been credited for face lifting infrastructure in rural areas.
