Chivi villagers send SOS after storm destroys homes

Villagers in Chivi South are appealing for building materials to repair their homes, clinics and schools following a violent storm that destroyed them.

Over 30 houses were either destroyed completely or had their roofs damaged, leaving scores of families homeless.

The storm also destroyed a ward community hall at Dare Business Centre.

Ward 28 Councillor Alfred Muzonikwa said the situation is dire.

He appealed to Government and its partners to chip in with assistance to help affected families to rebuild their homes.

Councillor Muzonikwa said some of the victims have temporarily sought shelter at their neighbours’ houses.

“Over 30 houses in Village 28 were destroyed by the storm and most of the damage was confined to roofs, leaving several families exposed to rain,” he said.

“In some cases even some churches had their roofs blown away by the strong winds.”

The Chivi District Development Coordinator’s office has been appraised about the magnitude of the damage and assistance is being mobilised.

Heavy rains that recently fell in Masvingo left a trail of destruction, ravaging homes, small dams, clinics and schools across the province.
