IN a bid to make sure they qualify for the 2017 World Cup in Botswana, the Zimbabwe Netball Association have appointed Marry Chiwenga, wife of the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Constantine Chiwenga, as their patron.
The team will in August attend the final qualifiers and will have the backing of their patron.
She is also the patron of Musha Mukadzi and Miss Zimbabwe Trust.
Zimbabwe Netball Association president Leticia Chinyani believes this will go a long way in promoting netball as a sport in this country.
“We are very happy to have Marry Chiwenga as our new patron and believe this will go a long way in promoting the sport which has improved immensely and put the country on the world map.
“We are looking forward to qualifying for next year’s World Cup to be hosted by our neighbours Botswana so we are grateful with this relationship which we have started.
“Netball started way back and we have been struggling but our local clubs have managed to do well in regional events where the army and police teams take part.
“The good thing is we now have a patron who is so supportive of the girl child and I hope this will go a long way in improving the sport,” Chinyani said.
Marry Chiwenga said she was happy to be associated with ZNA and will support them until they realise their dreams of qualifying for the World Cup.
“I am very happy to be associated with the association and I promise we will work together to improve the sport and we will try all we can to make sure that the national team qualify for the World Cup.
“We as Musha Mukadzi we can say we have a new baby who we will support and to make sure the team does well we will offer them accommodation and help pay some expenses towards their camping, transport, food and any other support they will need.”
