ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa and his deputy Omega Sibanda fly out this morning to attend the elective Fifa extraordinary general meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, on Friday.Fifa’s 209 affiliate members will choose a successor to Sepp Blatter, who had headed the world soccer governing body since 1998 and announced his resignation less than a week after being elected for a fifth term last May.
Five candidates, Gianni Infantino of Switzerland, Sheikh Salman Bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa of Bahrain, France’s Jerome Champagne, Jordan’s Ali Bin Al-
Hussein and South Africa’s Tokyo Sexwale are vying for football’s top post.
“Yes we’re leaving tomorrow (today) and coming back on Sunday,” said Chiyangwa yesterday.
The duo will be accompanied by Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze.
While Zifa’s choice of candidate is not known, continental governing body Caf recently released a statement backing Bahrain’s Ebrahim al-Khalifa. Chiyangwa has since met Frenchman Champagne and Jordan’s Al-Hussein.
The twin favourites, according to world media reports, remain Asian Football Confederation president Ebrahim al-Khalifa and Uefa general secretary Infantino.
