Cholera cases rise

CHOLERA cases continue to rise in Harare with over 5 200 suspected cases being recorded.

Harare City Council epidemiologist, Dr Michael Vere, said cholera was on the rise due to current rains being experienced.

He attributed the surge to poor hygiene and sanitation, as well as inadequate clean water supply. “Our biggest problem now is the fact that people are coming to our treatment facilities very sick. They take it for granted and we are losing a lot of patients unnecessarily.

“We now have over 5 200 cases recorded with 456 confirmed and 49 deaths. Kuwadzana, Dzivaresekwa and Glen View have the highest number of deaths.

“The most cases are being recorded in Budiriro, Glen View, Kuwadzana, Highfield and Hopley,” he said.

He said gatherings during the festive season might have contributed to the current surge in cases in Harare.

“The City, with huge support from government and private sector, is currently working on solid waste management in Harare.

“The water situation is still one of the major factors contributing to the current outbreak and we are still to find joy in that area and there is a need for a long-term permanent solution.”  The first cholera outbreak was reported on February 12 last year in Chegutu.
