An outbreak of cholera has hit Chingwizi where nearly 3 000 Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims are resettled with three cases of the deadly disease recorded last week. This forced the Government to deploy surveillance teams to closely monitor the health situation in the area amid growing fears that the disease could spread and affect more people.
The flood victims are sharing water from 17 boreholes that are functional, a situation that has been forcing some of them to resort to using water from the nearby canals that irrigate cane plantations at Mupapa Sugar Estates.
Masvingo provincial medical director Dr Robert Mudyiradima yesterday confirmed the outbreak of cholera saying the victims were admitted at Nuanetsi Clinic.
He said the situation was under control and investigations were underway to establish the origins of the disease.
“The people who were affected are receiving treatment. We are happy that they are responding to the treatment very well and there has not been any loss of life,’’ he said.
“We have our health teams carrying out heightened surveillance to ensure that the outbreak does not escalate. I can safely say the situation at Chingwizi is stable and we are on top of it,’’ he added.
