Chombo commissions electrification of Chengu Secondary School

Saturday, Minister Chombo said consistent education policies by Government had catapulted Zimbabwe to the pinnacle of literacy in Africa.

He also commissioned 10 computers donated by President Mugabe and a computer laboratory built by Zimasco as part of the company’s social responsibility programme.
“Zimbabwe has the highest literacy rate in Africa. This is due to the policies by President Mugabe since independence.

“The elements of free education in primary schools, provision of books among others have raised the standards of education in the country,” Minister Chombo said.
He hailed President Mugabe for his computerisation programme saying most school pupils were in touch with changes in technology.

Computers, he said, were a major teaching tool.
“Some 10 years back, the President moved with the times and realised the importance of computers in education.
“Up to now 80 percent of schools have benefited.

“What I knew when I was in Form Four is now known by a Grade Six pupil due to the computers and Internet services.”
The commissioning of the projects coincided with the renaming of the secondary school after its first headmaster Mr Shepherd Chengu.
The late Mr Chengu is Media, Information and Publicity secretary Mr George Charamba’s father-in-law.

He was one of the pioneer educationists in Zvimba, qualified to teach in secondary schools.
Minister Chombo urged adults in the area to enroll for computer classes.
“We are moving to a time where everyone will be using computers and it is against this background that I urge adults in our communities to enroll for the computer classes.

“We are still a developing country and this is the way to go,” he said.
Minister Chombo donated roofing material for a classroom block valued at US$5 000.

He also gave school authorities US$2 000 to sink a borehole to supplement water supplies used at the school.
He called for the establishment of a vocational training college in Mutorashanga to train the youths in technical jobs.
