Goromonzi on fire

reports from Virginia Beach in the United States,  sophomore defender Goromonzi (19) netted a pair of goals as her university college side Limestone reeled in Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 in an NCAA Division II field hockey game on Sunday.
Goromonzi kicked off the scoring at the 17:51 with an unassisted goal to give the Saints a 1-0 lead before senior striker Sara Parker collected her second assist of the season on a goal by junior striker Tyller Butler at 30:26.
Goromonzi, who was the star of the show, then put the game well out of reach at the 58:52 mark as she capped off the scoring with her second goal of the game.
The Marlins would net their only score of the game as Danielle Pellerin converted with 61:03 remaining to reach the final margin of 3-1.
Limestone enters a 10-day break between games as they do not return to the field until September 19 when they travel to Roanoke to face the Maroons.
Goromonzi, daughter of former Premier Soccer League treasurer Joseph Goromonzi, is in the second of her four-year hockey scholarship at Limestone College in the state of South Carolina.
During her first year at Limestone, Rachel, a utility player, won the hearts of many hockey fans in the United States with her outstanding performances which saw her winning a number of top accolades at the college.
Last year also saw the talented young Zimbabwean player making it into the All Stars team for North/South Carolina after she broke the programme record for goals in a season with 12 as she scored twice in Limestone’s 6-1 victory over Transylvania on November 6.
Now a second-year university student at Limestone, Rachel can play as a defender, midfielder or attacker. Rachel, a former pupil at Watershed College in Marondera, moved to Limestone College in August last year where she became an instant hit.

During her first three months at the college, Rachel topped the charts for the overall individual statistics as she made the highest number of shots at goal and she contributed one third of both shots on goal and the total shots on goal for the whole team.
According to the end-of-the-year NCAA Division II statistics for individual players for 2011, Rachel ended the season 16th in the chart for goals per game with 12 goals.
She was also ranked 17th in the chart for points per game with 12 goals and five assists which gave her 29 points and a place in the top 50.
And that was a phenomenal for a young, talented athlete who won the Sportsperson of the Year award for 2010 at Watershed College before she moved to Limestone.
At Watershed, apart from playing hockey, Rachel excelled in a number of other sporting disciplines, which include basketball, volleyball, athletics and swimming.
In swimming, Rachel scooped the school’s Victrix Ludorum Trophy for the most outstanding swimmer from 2005 to 2007, and then in 2009.
That was before she traveled to Phoenix in Arizona, United States, in November 2010 for a field hockey tournament where she caught the eye of a number of scouts from several American university colleges.
She finally won herself a four-year hockey scholarship at Limestone College in August last year after the school’s hockey team’s coaches viewed her video on YouTube.
Apart from playing hockey at Limestone College, Rachel is also studying for a degree in business administration.
