Chris Evans has admitted he’s “entirely sad” to leave his dream job on Top Gear and that he would have “loved” to carry on fronting the BBC show. The Radio 2 presenter, who had taken over the revamped version of the show after the departure of Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, quit hours after the final episode was broadcast last month.His decision came after a lacklustre reaction from the public saw viewing figures slip below 2million for the first time ever.
Writing in the Mail on Sunday the 50-year-old insisted that he had “no regrets” about the past year. “I am entirely sad Top Gear didn’t work out – I would have loved to have carried on working on it,” he admitted.
“But letting go with a smile on your face is far better than clinging on till you look constipated. Know what I mean?” Appearing to accept that – as many viewers claimed – the chemistry just wasn’t right with him on it, he continued: “Some things, however, simply don’t work out. It seems I may well have been a square peg in a round hole.”
Despite the attention and criticism levelled at him, the BBC and his co-presenter Matt Le Blanc, Chris said he had “no regrets” about the last year. “What a complete honour, privilege and a pleasure, And yes, I promise, I really did try to make the best show I possibly could,” he said.
It’s believed the BBC will not seek to replace Evans and instead co-host Matt Le Blanc would front the show alone. Appearing to support this and pouring cold water on allegations of a feud, Chris said the Friends star and Top Gear were “made for each other” and he is “the man” to captain the show back to success. – Mirror
