CHROME Stars have pulled out of the Zimbabwe General Medical Aid Fund Central Soccer League after principal sponsors Zimasco withdrew its financial backing.
Zimasco management has since surrendered the Chrome Stars’ franchise to the CSL, which is now left with 12 teams.
CSL chairman Stanley Chapeta said points teams got from Chrome Stars’ games would be annulled.
“I can confirm that Chrome Stars have pulled out of the league after Zimasco indicated that it cannot sustain the team. They have handed the franchise to us and we are saddened by the development, which is not good for football,” said Chapeta.
“However, the league will continue with 12 teams and all the points involving Chrome Stars will be thrown away. What it means therefore is that we will have to come up with a new fixture following the pulling out of Chrome Stars.”
Chrome Stars’ withdrawal will come as good news to Sheasham, who lost 1-0 on the opening day of the season, while Tongogara will feel hard done after clobbering the chrome miners 3-1 last weekend.
Meanwhile, the pulling out of Chrome Stars overshadowed the weekend fixtures, which saw Whawha and FC Lesaffre tasting defeat for the first time this season.
Whawha were shocked 0-1 by MSU in their own backyard on Saturday, while Telone put a stop to FC Lesaffre’s purple patch by beating them 2-1 at Ascot Stadium.
The result saw ZPC Munyati, who clobbered Ivan Hoe 3-0 at the weekend, taking over pole position from the four games they have played so far with nine points.
