CHRISTMAS came early for tots at Emthunzini Wethemba Children’s Home in Bulawayo after Chronicle donated food and other items to the institution yesterday. Chronicle is using its 120th anniversary celebrations to spread the festive cheer to the underprivileged. Receiving the donation, administrator of the home Alfred Ncube said the survival of children at the home depended on donations from the community.
“We usually depend on help from the international community. It’s a wonderful thing to see more donations from local companies and organisations,” said Ncube.
“We’re grateful that there’re people who can help us. Your presence is going to make a difference to the lives of these children. We feel loved and supported. These children need your support.”
Chronicle circulation manager Vethi Tshuma said it was not the first time the company donated to the home. He said Emthunzini Wethemba was like a second home to Chronicle. The concept, he said, is to inject life assisted by the Word of God.
Tshuma added: “If God has managed to take us this far he can’t fail to take us further. The donation was inspired by editors. This was led by one capable leader and visionary, Mduduzi Mathuthu — Chronicle editor.”
Chronicle Business editor Prosper Ndlovu said the children captured the newspaper’s attention as they were the hope for tomorrow.
“This is the little that we have. Our hope in you as children is that you grow up and do great things that we couldn’t do. We see potential doctors and even editors. Some of you might even work for Chronicle,” said Ndlovu.
B-Metro editor Limukani Ncube weighed in saying the donation was a way of showing appreciation to those who help bring business to the company. He said it was also part of the daily’s 120 years celebrations with the community as without it, there would not be any celebrations.
“Thank you for being with us for 120 years. We want to share the little that we have with our little brothers and sisters and celebrate together as Christmas is approaching,” said Ncube.
Chronicle human resources manager, Blessing Gumbo, encouraged the home to take good care of the children and take time to nurture them. Chronicle donated six cases of sugar beans, four cases of salt, three boxes of green bar soap, three boxes of 2 litres cooking oil, seven cases of sugar, 15 loaves of bread and 150kg of mealie-meal.
