FORMER Masvingo United player Ovidy Karuru made his first appearance for his Belgian Jupiler League side OH Leuven as they defeated visiting Zulte-Waregem 1-0 at the weekend.Karuru had been sidelined by his coach in Belgium with some sections of the local press here running stories that the midfielder had since been shown the door.
Last season, he played 1 097 minutes, making 21 appearances of which he was in the starting line up 13 times while coming in as a substitute on eight occasions. This season though things took a different turn as he was constantly left out, despite reports indicating that he was putting in his best at training.
However, he seems to have fought his way back to the team and was a 65th minute substitution when he came in for fellow African Evariste from Cameroon.
OH Leuven lie 14th in the 16 team league with 22 points. Fellow Zimbabweans in the Jupiler League, Nyasha Mushekwi formerly of Caps United and Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa and former Highlanders player Vusa Nyoni had mixed fortunes over the weekend.
Mushekwi played the whole match for KV Oostende who beat Waasland Beveren 2-1 but did not find the target.
Nyoni was, however, not so lucky as his team did not only lose 0-2 to Mechelen, he was not included in the team and watched the match from the terraces.
Mons anchor the log with just 13 points, seven points behind the 15th placed side Waasland-Beveren. In England, Bradley Pritchard’s Charlton Athletic recorded a 1-0 win over Huddersfield in the FA Cup fourth round encounter to book an encounter against Sheffield United in the next round.
Denmark, Czech Republic and Romanian leagues are still on the break. Former Motor Action forward Quincy Antipas and Silas Songani formerly with Harare City ply their trade for Brondby and Sonderjyske in the Danish Superliga respectively.
Former AmaZulu leftback Costa Nhamoinesu plays for Sparta Praha in the Czech Republic while Mike Temwanjira is at Vaslui in Romania.
