Landa Nkomo Cup to return

THE John Landa Nkomo Liquor Hub Super 8 Cup is set to make a return next year since the Zifa Southern Region Division One last hosted it in 2016.

The Super 8 Cup, which is named after the late Vice-President John Landa Nkomo, is sponsored by businessman Raj Modi, who is also the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce.

ZPC Hwange were the last winners of the competition when it was last contested in 2016.
The knockout tournament is set to return in mid-season next year, with the top eight teams at the half way stage of the season battling it out for the silverware.

Zifa Southern Region board member in charge of competitions Fiso Siziba said groundwork plans to stage the tournament were already underway.

“We are in talks with the sponsors of the competition and intend to hold it in mid-season. Before it stopped, we had the top eight teams at the end of the season participating in this knockout tournament, but we will do things differently this time around by having the top eight at the halfway stage taking part.

“We are certain that this will be a huge motivation for teams when the league begins. The teams will be fighting to be in the top eight at the halfway stage of the season so that they take part in the Super 8 competition,” said Siziba.

He also revealed that they were planning to stage another tournament at the end of the season and are still finalising with prospective sponsors.

Zifa Southern Region is presently hosting the Wafa Wafa competition for Division One clubs to test the preparedness of teams ahead of the season kick-off on January 15.

The pre-season competition will see winners cashing in US$3 000 and losing finalists US$2 000.
The competition is now at the semi-final stage and dates for the encounters will be announced after the festive holidays.
