THE Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (LTDS) last week donated goods worth $16 000 to the Bulawayo Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.
The timely donation coincided with the church’s launch of the Light the World Programme. The church’s public affairs officer, Mr Mhlengi Ndlovu, handed over the goods that included a tonne of maize, cooking oil, soya chunks, flour, sugar, salt, mealie-meal, soup and clothes to the Mayor, Councillor Solomon Mguni who was the guest of honour.
Speaking at the event, Clr Mguni expressed gratitude to the kind and charitable gesture by the church.
“We are grateful for the donations we have received and we are sure they are going to go a long way in pronouncing cheers to the less privileged in our society. This year the Cheer Fund’s target is ZWL$500 000 with goods and a number of activities that are going to take place. This has opened doors for more donations from well-wishers to come through so that we can make this festive memorable for everyone,” he said.
LTDS president Pardon Ndlovu launched the programme saying it was meant to make Christmas memorable even to the needy.
“This initiative is meant to touch lives this festive season and bring back the original meaning of Christmas to everyone by doing what Christ did. The programme is going to be guided by a 25 days calendar from 1 to 25 December with different guidelines on things to do on a daily basis that will have a positive impact on the next person. As a church we will continue donating and helping people out there, yes, it had been a while since we donated to the Christmas Cheer Fund but from now on, we promise to try our best and share the little that we have with the underprivileged,” said Mr Ndlovu.
