IN a move that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Norton yesterday spearheaded a collaborative tree-planting initiative expected to make a lasting impact on environmental sustainability.
The tree planting initiative aligns with SDGs that are focused on climate action, sustainable cities and communities, and life on land.
Working in partnership with the Forestry Commission of Zimbabwe, Zimpapers under its Corporate Social Responsibility banner, and Twinlakes Private Primary School, the church facilitated the planting of 45 trees, including five at the school in commemoration of International Tree Planting Day held annually on December 1.
The initiative is anticipated not only to enhance the local ecosystem, but also to contribute to long-term efforts to combat climate change through the creation of community-based carbon sinks.
Project coordinator Mr Timothy Fred said the idea behind the programme was to promote the establishment of afforestation hubs in communities and institutions such as schools.
He emphasized that while the event marked the global tree-planting commemoration, the partners envision sustained activity beyond the single day.
