Churches gather in Chinhoyi for day of prayer

VARIOUS religious denominations and representative bodies on Monday came together to pray for Mashonaland West Province, the nation and its leadership

The day of prayer was in commemoration of Africa Day to invite divine intervention for the country’s well-being and growth.

Pastors said it was everyone’s duty to pray for the country and its leadership for the benefit of the citizenry.

The prayer session brought together members from Pentecostal, Apostolic, Zion, and traditional churches among others.

Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe (ACCZ) chairperson, Overseer Daniel Chimatira, said it was the responsibility of Christians to pray for the spiritual, moral, economic, and political well-being of the nation.

“If ever we expect Zimbabwe to do well, we need to humble ourselves, leave wicked ways and pray that is the starting point,” said Overseer Chimatira

“As members of the church, we should stand in the gap for the nation and pray, then we will see wisdom unfold in our leadership at every level for the good of everyone.”

Madzibaba Samuel Mudonhi of UDASIZA said people served in different denominations but prayed to the same God.

“We are thankful to the Government led by President Mnangagwa for creating a free environment for worship. We have the right to worship, which is not found in other countries,” said Madzibaba Mudonhi.

Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, Mashonaland West provincial chairperson Reverend Jacob Mafukidze, hailed the unity of the church.

Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations representative Bishop Peter Banda said the church was stronger when united.

“We come from different denominations, but we are of the same body. Each one is important in its area of operation. So we must value everyone’s contribution,” said Bishop Banda.

Host church, United Family International Church (UFIC) Chinhoyi Branch Pastor Adonijah Nyakudya said the church had taken a major and commendable step in coming together to pray for the country and its people.

“This is something that has not happened in a long time, where churches come together for a common cause without the constraints of denominations,” said Pastor Nyakudya.

“We should do this more often to strengthen the church’s contribution to national development and cohesion.”

The meeting prayed for an end to the scourge of drug and substance abuse amid calls for parents to pray for their children so that they do not fall into the trap of substance abuse.

Congregants also prayed in gratitude for the largely sufficient rains in the just-ended season.
