GOSPEL couple John and Eleana Makombe have, for the first time, revealed how they came close to death after they were involved in a car crash in Harare on New Year’s Eve.

On Saturday, they were the stars of the show as Zimbabwe’s gospel fraternity turned out in full force at the Zimbali Gardens in a powerful show of unity and support for UK-based gospel singer Eleana,

She launched her new album ‘She Is Grateful’.

The emotional part of the evening came through a deeply personal testimony shared by the couple.

Addressing the audience, John narrated the terrifying road accident the couple survived last December near the Seke Flyover in Harare.

“We were driving on New Year’s Eve from the airport when suddenly we found ourselves caught in a serious accident involving a trailer and three other cars,” he said.

The crash shocked many who later saw the images online.

“When we stepped out of the car still shaken, a woman approached us and said something we will never forget: ‘God loves you.’

“Those words stayed with us and became a reminder of how precious life is.”

He said that experience inspired the album’s central theme.

“That moment changed how we look at everything. Gratitude became our testimony.”

The gathering felt less like a routine album launch and more like a grand reunion of the gospel community.

Industry pioneers, contemporary stars and devoted followers came together under one roof to celebrate faith, music and gratitude.

By early evening, the venue had transformed into a meeting place of gospel heavyweights.

Conversations flowed freely as artists greeted one another warmly, some reflecting on the rare moment that had brought so many influential figures together.

Among the distinguished guests was legendary gospel icon Baba Mechanic Manyeruke, whose presence added a sense of history to the occasion.

Also spotted mingling with guests were the celebrated gospel couple Charles Charamba and Olivia Charamba, as well as popular ensembles Joyful Praise Choir, The Unveiled Sabastian Magacha, Canaan Nyathi, Everton Mlalazi, and Vabvuwi.

Madam Boss, Kuda the Choreographer and Shingi Ziwange also had their share of the gospel spirit.

Their presence underscored the respect Eleana commands on the gospel landscape.

The call to dress for the moment was answered, turning the launch into a glamorous affair as elegant gowns and sharp suits dominated the scene, adding a sparkle to the spiritually-charged gathering.

Hospitality matched the celebratory mood.

Guests were treated to a generous buffet while enjoying fellowship and networking with fellow artists and worshippers.

Eleana used the platform to introduce the “She Is Grateful” mocktail, a signature drink unveiled in partnership with the venue.

Organisers revealed the beverage would remain on the menu at Zimbali Gardens, ensuring the album’s legacy lives on beyond the launch night.

The audience listened attentively before the focus shifted to an engaging on-stage interview between Eleana and media personality Josh Juru.

During the conversation, Eleana opened up about the deeper message behind the album.

“This project is about recognising God’s goodness in every situation,” she said.

“Sometimes we only thank Him when things go well, but true gratitude should be a lifestyle.”

Moments later, the evening shifted fully into celebration as Eleana stepped onto the stage to perform several songs from the new album.

Her heartfelt vocals quickly connected with the audience, many of whom joined in singing and worship.

Just when the crowd thought the performance had reached its peak, Eleana stunned guests by introducing gospel singer Sharon Cherayi for a surprise remix collaboration.

The unexpected duet brought the crowd to life, with cheers echoing across the venue.

Another major highlight followed when South African gospel sensation Lebo Sekgobela appeared as a surprise guest performer.

Her powerful delivery of the worship anthem “Lion of Judah” turned the venue into a sanctuary of praise as many in attendance lifted their hands in worship.

The night closed on a high note with energetic performances from Joyful Praise Choir and The Unveiled, whose spirited sets kept the audience on its feet.
