BULAWAYO’S city centre is fast becoming a lawless jungle — where the stench of urine mixes with the stench of bootleg booze — all happening in broad daylight, according to a concerned city father.
Ward 24 Councillor Tavengwa Zidya has raised the alarm, saying the central business district is turning into a haven for illegal alcohol sales, public drinking, and open urination — activities he says are chasing away legitimate businesses.
“Legitimate businesses such as bottle stores are losing clients to individuals who sell alcohol from the boot of their cars right in front of their doorsteps. We see their clients urinating on trees and street corners in the middle of the city centre during the day. That kind of behaviour is not good for the image of the City of Bulawayo,” said Cllr Zidya.
Cllr Zidya — who also runs businesses in the CBD — says he’s witnessed by-laws being broken left, right and centre, with no shame.
“The city centre is already losing businesses that are opting to rent premises in Suburbs and Khumalo and if the illegal activities continue the CBD will soon be deserted,” he warned.
In a bid to clean up the chaos, he has engaged the police, who he says are showing a willingness to tackle the rot.
“I applaud the police for conducting regular raids but more needs to be done,” he said.
If the trend continues, Bulawayo’s once-bustling CBD may soon be nothing more than a ghost town with empty shops, rowdy drinkers, and makeshift bars on four wheels.
