HARARE City Council is currently installing street lights, cables and new traffic lights across the Central Business District.

Harare City Council Director of Electrical Services, Engineer Calvin Chigariro, said:

“We are aiming to refurbish the old street lights which were vandalised by notorious people and install new street lights ahead of the SADC Summit.

“In terms of power supply, we have moved away from individual solar units on top of each light, what we are now going to do as a city is to have solar farms.

“We experienced a lot of vandalism and it became unviable for us to have solar units installed on individual lights, so for now we are resolved to go for a grouped supply of renewable energy,” he said.

At a recent full council meeting, Engineer Chigariro revealed that the council was considering refurbishing old street lights and replacing them with new LED ones.

“We are aiming to refurbish the old street lights which were vandalised and install over five hundred street lights,” said Eng Chigariro. Council spokesperson, Stanley Gama, urged the public to be cautious when moving around in town.

“City of Harare employees are busy digging trenches to lay cables for street lights, the city is beautifying the streets beyond next month’s SADC Summit,” he said.

“We urge residents to cooperate with our workers as we beautify our city.”
