City of Bulawayo and Zinara meet on road maintenance

TOP officials from the Bulawayo City Council and Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (Zinara) on Friday held talks focusing on the need for road authorities to share equipment, optimising its use and improving efficiency in road maintenance.

The high level engagement which took place at the mayor’s palour in Bulawayo included the city’s mayor, councillor David Coltart, Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube and Zinara chief executive officer, Mr Nkosinathi Ncube.

In an update, the road Authority said “Today, ZINARA CEO Mr Nkosinathi Ncube held a productive meeting with Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart, discussing key issues, including the provision of road maintenance equipment to enhance the city’s capacity for effective road rehabilitation and upkeep.

“Mayor Coltart stressed the need to improve Bulawayo’s drainage system to prevent water clogging, which accelerates road failure. He said proper drainage will enhance road durability and reduce premature deterioration,” reads part of the update.

Zinara said the discussions were comprehensive and also emphasised the need for road authorities to share equipment, optimising its use and improving efficiency in road maintenance.

In recent days, the city has experienced significant rainfall, revealing the inadequacy of its storm drainage system and leading to flooding on the roads.

The city center is especially susceptible to flash flooding due to blocked drainage systems, which endanger motorists and pedestrians and damage road infrastructure.

Several tonnes of garbage are left uncollected on the streets clogging drains and creating a myriad of related health and infrastructural problems.
