THE City of Harare’s Health Department, UNFPA and the Ministry of Health and Child Care are set to launch the Community Health Equity Fund (CHEF) programme next month.
A Community Health Equity Fund is an initiative where the community will prepay for health services rather than pay on the day they receive service and is managed at community level.
This initiative will transform healthcare access in community clinics by shifting from user fees to an annual prepayment model of just US$2 per resident.
City Health Manager, Mr Richard Chigerwe, said the fund aims to revolutionise the Council Health Services and it is accessible and equitable for all residents.
“CHEF will provide high-quality healthcare services to all residents. It will establish radiology and maternity services in community clinics as well as upgrade healthcare facilities to improve the overall patient experience,” said Mr Chigerwe.
The fund will be managed at the community and clinic level, giving local residents a bigger say in their healthcare.
He added that the fund’s approach aims to promote community ownership and participation in healthcare decision-making.
The Community Health Equity Fund programme has the potential to significantly enhance health outcomes and drive positive change in Harare’s communities.
By making healthcare more accessible and equitable, this initiative can help reduce health disparities and improve the overall well-being of residents.
