City Rovers keep eye on the prize

ZIFA Eastern Region Division One log leaders Mutare City Rovers are not resting on their laurels even after opening a relatively comfortable five-point lead the summit of the log.
The Premiership promotion aspirants have been active on the market as they moved in to add depth to their squad by luring veteran former Sporting Lions, Highway and Triangle midfielder Clemence “Skude” Mkudu, defender Bruce “Shanu” Poso and midfielder Daniel Chipongo.

The Mutare Municipality side, which is affectionately known as Gusha Bhora, continued with their fine run after clobbering Black Eagles 3-0 at Sakubva Stadium last Saturday.

Kenny “Bokande” Kachara’s men got their goals through former Buffaloes defender Bonvolio Mkwena, Hibron “Adala” Makukutu and exciting youngster Lawrence Masibera.

City Rovers will face Ruwa United in their next match and their coach Kachara remains bullish that his team will keep collecting maximum points.

“We are not underestimating any team in the league and we are preparing each match as it comes.

“All we want is to keep collecting points and hope that we will be able to achieve our ambition of getting promoted into the Premiership.

“We have recruited midfielder Clemence “Skude” Mkudu, defender Bruce “Shanu” Poso and another midfielder, Daniel Chipongo.

“We hope these players will add depth to our squad as we seek to finish the season on a high note.

“The good thing is that all the three are experienced players who have seen it all in Division One and also in the Premiership. In our quest for promotion, I believe experience has no substitute,” said Kachara.

However, it is Mutare City Rovers’ comeback kid – Kachara- who has attracted much attention given the awe-inspiring 10-match unbeaten run since he took over from axed Joseph Takaringofa.

Kachara started his fairy tale run with a 3-1 triumph over Gaza Gunners and since then he is yet to lose a match.

Rovers have made no secret of their intentions to attain Premiership promotion and lack of consistency on the field of play as well as boardroom bickering within the club leadership have been their greatest undoing in the previous two seasons.

The Mutare City Council-owned team got promoted from the Manicaland Division Two League into the Eastern Region Division One two years ago.

Upon gaining promotion into Division One, City Rovers gave a good account of themselves when they settled for fourth position at the end of the league season and went on to clinch the coveted Sylvia Dube Memorial Trophy.

Last year, City Rovers were even more determined and came second in the race for the league title behind the then well-financed eventual league winners Hippo Valley, who were later rechristened Chiredzi United.

Nonetheless, it appears log leaders Dongo Sawmills, Eastern Stars, former Premiership side Masvingo United and Mutare City Rovers all have realistic chances of winning this riveting race for promotion into the domestic top flight league.
