THE City of Harare is set to establish a committee to conduct a full inquiry into the death of three municipal workers at the Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant last week.
The incident has brought renewed scrutiny on safety standards within Council operations.
The death of the three workers comes a few months after two other employees died at Firle Sewage Treatment Works in August after they inhaled toxic fumes.
The latest tragedy brings the total number of Council workers who have died, while on duty this year, to five.
Speaking during a full Council meeting on Wednesday, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume said the city must not take the matter lightly.
He said the loss of life demands a thorough and transparent investigation.
“If there is a need to establish a committee or a full inquiry into the matter, then so be it,” said Mafume.
“We need to examine the safety procedures at the plant, understand what went wrong, and ensure we prevent such incidents in the future.”
Mafume said the inquiry would look into the condition of equipment at the water treatment facility, compliance with occupational safety protocols, and whether workers were adequately protected.
The findings, he added, will guide the city in strengthening workplace safety and ensuring no Council employee faces similar risks while carrying out their duties.
