THE City of Harare will review how its traffic cops operate while it has instituted investigations into the case of a traffic cop whose video, bashing a motorist, is circulating on social media.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume said the officer has been identified and an inquiry will be conducted.

“Traffic enforcement is an emotive issue in many contexts.

“The officer has been identified and an inquiry would be held, we have asked the affected individual to come forward.

“There is real danger to life and limb for both concerned and a misunderstanding can escalate to mob justice.”

Mayor Mafume said a review on how Harare traffic cops operate will be conducted.

“We will do a review of our methods from bottom up, the rot has to be mapped and eradicated,” he said.

“This incident may be easier to deal with but as you say a wider and deeper approach has to be adopted.”

Turning to how kombis conduct their business in the Harare CBD, Mayor Mafume said:

“The kombis in turn violate so many laws and put many people in danger, we need to find a balance. Learn from other societies and assist our public, we have solutions but they need to be implemented by both parties.

“Sometimes it is the unregistered kombis that are the issue.”
