LAST week we reported a very depressing story of four men who took turns to rape a Form 2 student, who had fled her home after a row with her mother, in Highfield.
We reported that William Mpurura, 30, Solomon Mugodhi, 34, Lawrence Gave, 36, and Blessed Bokosha, 30, all of Highfield, were arrested for gang raping the 14-year-old at a house in Old Highfield.
The student had sought refuge from her angry mother after she was caught chatting with an unidentified person on her mobile phone. The four suspects appeared in court and were remanded in custody by Harare magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa.
They were advised to apply for bail at the High Court as they are facing a third schedule offence.
The court heard that last Sunday, the complainant fled to her friend’s house after her mother had threatened to beat her up as she had refused to unlock her phone.
Her friend told her that she couldn’t assist because her mother was at home.
The teenager started loitering and was approached by a man who asked her why she was wandering around the neighbourhood.
She told him that she was looking for a place to sleep.
She was taken to a house in Highfield where she was raped by the four men throughout the night.
This is not only difficult to report but it is hard to understand.
We are also human beings and even though we are professionals, we also have a conscience and such horrible stories affect us too.
But, we have to report about them because by doing so we cast a spotlight on such evil things which are happening in our society.
It’s hard to understand the state of the minds of those four men.
It’s difficult to try and understand their motive and the satisfaction they were getting from this horrendous sexual attack.
These are animals, as simple as that.
They are not human beings but animals and they should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
They deserve to rot in jail because our kids are not safe with these thugs living in our neighbourhoods.
It’s horrific, to say the least, and they should be punished severely for their shameful acts.
This is just a Form Two girl whose life was full of promise.
Now, her life has been shattered by four rogue men who chose violence and a shameless attack on this innocent soul.
What she went through that night will never be erased from her mind. It will haunt her for the rest of her life.
This case also highlights the importance of finding solutions when we are confronted with challenges in our families.
The row, which forced her to flee her home, should have been resolved in a better way.
She should never have felt that the best way for her was to flee her home.
She should have felt comfortable being in her home while the dispute with her mother was being resolved.
