THE City of Harare has resolved not to renew permits of bars located at Sundridge Shopping Centre in Mabelreign.
This is due to the noise pollution and general anti-social behaviour by patrons.
Mabelreign residents have been raising concern over the noise levels at the shopping centre, especially after hours.
They also complained that the revellers’ unbecoming behaviour exposed their children to immorality.
Acting district officer for Mabelreign and Marlborough, Jane Gambiza, said Council was in the process of taking action against bars and bottle stores at Sunridge Shopping Centre.
Gambiza said they had assigned the City health inspector, in charge of the area, to cease issuing permits for all liquor outlets at Sunridge shops.
She could not say when the current permits expire but hinted that they could be withdrawn immediately.
She said Sherwood Golf Club requires police clearance for them to host live musical shows.
“It’s just a golf course. They are not supposed to have open air music shows, but they are holding open air music shows.
“I have gone there on several occasions during the weekend.
“Last Saturday, I was there at around 11pm asking them to reduce the volume, but it’s now beyond us and we are now working on withdrawing their permit.”
She urged residents to be patient as the process of shutting down these liquor outlets was a lengthy one.
Gambiza said Council expects to be complemented by other law enforcement agencies, like the police, to enforce Council by-laws.
“Our municipal officers work from 8am to 5pm.
“So, we are thinking of requesting the police to help us do something about Sunridge,” she said.
Gambiza said there should only be one bar at the Sunridge shops which should close at 8.30pm.
“We don’t expect butcheries to operate beyond the time they are doing.”
